Another weekend, another festival! This weekend was the Great Lakes Folk Festival, and it was a blast. I attended last year, but spent a lot more time walking around and taking in everything that was going on this year. There are lots of independent artists and business people that take advantage of this network of people every year, really awesome to be apart of.

Had the opportunity to shoot Common Ground this year for the Arts Council of Greater Lansing. It was my first time at the fest and I was really impressed with the way everything was run. It’s a huge event and the team works hard to make sure everything runs smoothly. Already looking forward to next year!

Took these two photos this weekend, which I think are a step outside of a lot of what I typically shoot, but that I’m pretty happy with. It’s nice to see myself breaking out of habits a little bit as I continue to shoot.
I had a super busy weekend covering Summer Solstice Jazz Festival, Old Town Scrapfest, and Festival of the Sun & Moon this weekend for ACGL, but I had a blast checking it all out. I love going to festivals like these and just seeing all the things this city, state, and community has to offer.

Pleasure in the Process: Gretal Geist-Rutledge
This is my completed story about Gretal Geist-Rutledge, a printmaker and fabric artist based in East Lansing, MI. Geist-Rutledge is retired, and because of that, she said she truly gets to enjoy the work she produces, rather than having to stress over whether or not it is successful. I think that’s a great thing to remember for anyone that produces art.
I’m wrapping up a photo story I’ve been working on about Gretel Geist-Rutledge, a local fabric artist and printmaker. For her, art is all about the sheer pleasure of creating. She doesn’t stress herself about it, and she doesn’t do it for a living, it’s just something she is passionate about. I think that’s something any artist can learn from.
While visiting Linda Beeman, she treated us to a delicious brunch - frittata, chocolate chip pecan muffins, and fruit with a homemade yogurt dressing. Delicious!
Last week, the Arts Council brought me along as they visited Linda Beeman in tiny town Ovid, MI. Linda was a recent recipient of an artist’s grant and we wanted to check in with her, check out her work, and see what kind of space she lives in. She is a printmaker who works in a Japanese technique called moku hanga. Linda works to capture the natural beauty of the world in much of her work and the finished pieces are truly astounding.
